2004 Club News

The Setanta Awards for 2004 were announced at the recent Champions Banquet.Thanks to Brian White who organised the night and to all who attended, making it yet another great Setanta social event.

  • Setanta Gaelic Football and Surf Club & Na Fianna Ladies Gaelic Football Club and request your attendance at the banquet to be held in celibration of an historic event:
    One City, Two Gaelic Football Clubs, Two North American Championship Titles!
    The banquet will be held at Candelas Restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter and will commence at 8:30 pm, on Friday, November 12th, 2004. A pre-function meeting place may be organized.
    A four-course meal will be presented with a selection of entrées. A vegetarian meal is available upon request.
    A program of awards, toasts, presentations, rounds, and various and sundry I-love-you-man's is anticipated.
    Dancing in Cadelas' lounge to follow.
  • Message from the Halloween Bus Organisers Well folks-
    On behalf of Setanta GFC, a quick note to say thanks for your support and for making Friday night such a success! Hopefully we've all recovered at this stage anyway...
    I think it's safe to say there'll be another one next year- any suggestions on how to improve are appreciated.
    Cheers and we look forward to seeing ye all soon, and hopefully at another Setanta fundraiser..

  • Sign Up Here for Halloween Bus
    As ye should all now be aware- the annual, and much celebrated, Setanta Halloween Bus Tour- kicks off this Friday, from The Silver Fox Pub in P.B. at 7.15pm.
    We intend to have people back to P.B. by 1-1.30a.m. Costumes are compulsory and there will be some on-bus competitions... We will have specials at all the bars, and the bus will also be well stocked with beers and maybe even a soft drink or two...
    Price is $30 and should be paid in the Silver Fox before the bus (all funds to Setanta G.F.C.)..
    Please remember if you are having a few drinks, leave the car at home!
    Most people have reserved tickets- please confirm A.S.A.P. We may have a few seats left so let us know and we'll do what we can...

  • Congratulations to Setanta coach Tony O'Boyle who recently got engaged to Heather in the City of Light....Paris. Tony now hopes the year finishes off in style with John Kerry winning the Presidential election.
  • Setanta won the US National Junior B Championship on Labor Day Weekend with three brilliant wins in a row against teams from Boston, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. In the final Setanta played some superb football winning 3-11 to 1-08. The celebrations only got better when the womens team from San Diego, Na Fianna won the Ladies Junior B title making it surely the biggest GAA party San Diego has ever known.
    The Draw for the 2004 Raffle was held on Thursday August 5th. The Winners are as follows:

  • Setanta won the Western Regional Championships on Saturday July 31st. In the big game of the day, Setanta beat the Wild Geese 2-17 to 1-03. This win guaranteed Setanta qualification for the National Finals in Boulder Colorado, Labor day weekend. In the second game of the day, Setanta fielded a Junior C team against The Phoenix Gaels. After a poor first half, Setanta played alot better but ended up losing by a goal.The final game of the day was Setanta against the Denver Gaels. Denver were good value for a three point lead at half time but Setanta upped the effort in the second half to win 2-11 to 2-04. This capped a great day for Setanta. The post match celebrations were on at The Field pub Downtown.
  • The Mission Bay Party was a massive success on Saturday July 17th. Highlight of the day was Sod Celtic beating Conor Coffeys Best, 5-2 in a thrilling display of passing soccer. We also had at least 6 bee stings, 120 attendees and Kevin Lynch giving speed boat rides seeing as Colm Conneelys boat never made it. A Huge amount of thanks needs to be given to Mick Ward and The Ould Sod Pub who turned up to set up the kegs as well as sponsoring 4 of them.Thanks also to Stella Artois and The Dublin Square.Time for the partying boots to be put on hold and for everyone to concentrate on football and the big game on July 31st.
  • Setanta continued their unbeaten run On Saturday July 10th at La Jolla High School. Level at Half time, a dominating second half saw Setanta pull ahead with 10 minutes to go and they never gave up the lead. Yet again Setantas tight defense was key to victory and with a bit more luck could have grabbed a few more goals, with Dermot Gilligan hitting the crossbar and Conor "Champ" O'Donoghue narrowly volleying wide. The Final Score was Setanta 1-14 Wild Geese 1-10The celebrations continued in The Blarney Stone with the highlight being Coach O'Boyle going walkabouts.The Next game for Setanta is the Western Regional Final on July 31st, being hosted at The Little Q, beside Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.More details to come
  • Saturday June 26th 2004 marked the day Setanta recorded their first ever win against the Wild Geese in Orange County. Playing with an understrength team, the defence gave a rousing performance keeping the Geese to just 0-8 points. The Final score was Setanta 1-08 Wild Geese 0-08(Match Report to Follow). Setanta will now host the Southern California League Final on August 15th.
  • Sand training begins Saturday June 19th at Crown Point where the grass meets the sand.Wear your sneakers as there will be plenty of running. Training begins at 11.30am.
  • A very succesful day of Gaelic Football was held at Doyle Rec Center on Saturday June 12th. The day started off with Na Fianna beating the O.C.Roisins. This was followed by a 5 point victory for Setanta over the Wild Geese. The game was level at half time but Setanta came out in the second half and finished with two very nice goals scored by McCole and McGuigan.Final Score Setanta 2-13 Wild Geese 3-05.The final game of the day was Setanta "C" against San Luis Obispo.It ended up a very high scoring game, Setanta 6-18 San Luis Obispo 7-04 with the highlight being Tye Donnelly scoring seven points from play and Conor Smith letting in 7 goals.
    The night finished off in The Ould Sod where everyone enjoyed lots of Guinness and the odd Jameson.
  • Setanta travelled to San Luis Obispo and played the first Gaelic Football game played there.Setanta ran out easy winners but by all accounts the craic was mighty afterwards with Declan McCole injuring his toe in a door accident and Anto getting special mention as Batter Burger winner.
  • Setanta drew their first Southern California League game against the Wild Geese on May 23rd. The score was Setanta 1-12 Wild Geese 2-09.
  • Congratulations to Declan King and his wife Sarah who had a baby Boy on Friday 21st May.
  • Congratulations to Frank Carroll who got married to Erin on Saturday May 8th and also to Adrian Callaghan who finally proposed to Katie. Well done lads.Fair Play
  • Practise Has Started. We practise every Tuesday and Thursday at Nobel Park in UTC. Start time is 6pm
  • Setanta will be marching in the San Diego St Patricks Day Parade on March 13th.We will also have a booth with club T shirts & Polos for sale.
  • Congratulations to Conor Coffey and Tomas O Sullivan who have been elected as Vice Chairman and Registrar respectively of the Southern California Divisional Board
  • An ecstatic Rory O Loughlin recently sold some of his Elan shares when they shot up 35% in one day.
  • The Armagh Senior Football Team visited San Diego from Jan 15th to the 18th as part of their winter holiday. While in San Diego they practised at La Jolla High School and their skills and drills were watched by the brave Setanta lads who were able to get out of bed after the massive session in the Aussie Pub the night before.
  • 2004 started off well for Setanta with the confirmation that Tony O'Boyle will coach the team for the upcoming season. Tony played most of his football with the great Dublin Club, St Vincents and also represented Dublin in the All Ireland Minor Final in 1988.
