2008 Club News

December 14th 2008: The Ould Sod is having their Xmas Party this Monday Dec 15th from 6-8pm. This is a good chance to meet up before Xmas for a couple of social drinks.

October 25th 2008:The 2008 Setanta awards night was hosted at the Stout Pub in downtown San Diego. With an attendance of over 100 people a great night of banter was had. Here are the award winners

  • Oct 21st 2008:

  • The End of Season Banquet/Awards night is being held on Friday October 24th. As ever this is a shared night with Na Fianna and a very large attendance is expected. There are drink specials on Guinness and Pacifico. Food will also be served on a first come first served basis. Here are the details:
    Date: Friday Oct 24th 2008
    Time: 7pm
Stout Public House No Suits or ties, but look sharp in case we go clubbing afterwards!!
    Oct 11th 2008:

  • Unfortunetly we were unable to secure a double decker bus this year so the annual Halloween Bus is not going to happen. There is going to be an alternative night out planned for December.

    Sept 1st 2008:

  • It was a mixed weekend in Boston for Setanta. The understrength Junior C team got well beaten by the eventual winners, Chicago Patriots. There is no doubting that the club needs to recruit more players in the off season to make the C team competitive again. The Junior B team fared better, but lost the final by 5 points to Charlotte James Connollys. The previous two games took its toll on Setanta as both had to go to extra time with Setanta winning both by 1 point. So now the season is over, its time for everyone in the club to recharge the batteries and come back in 2009 ready to improve things on and off the field.
    August 27th 2008:

  • Setanta are in the final preparation stages of sending two teams to the North American Finals in Boston. A huge challenge is ahead considering we won both Junior B and C in 2007. Can we repeat this feat?
    August 18th 2008:

  • The Setanta Golf tournament was yet another success. All profits were shared between the San Diego Youth GAA and Setanta and long may this continue. Hosted at the Carlton Oaks course, there was a Padhraig Harrington type performance from Joe Slasher King. Special thanks goes to Ultan Breslin for his hard work organising the tournament. Thanks also to the hole sponsors.
    August 2nd 2008:

  • The two games played at La Jolla were very competitive and exciting. In the first game the Holiday Harps fielding 8 senior footballers from different counties slugged it out with Setanta. With two points down with two mins to go, Setanta somehow drew the game, a fair result overall. In the other game the Wild Geese played a selection of Setanta Junior B and C players. The difference between the teams was The Geeses ability to get goals when needed. Best for Setanta was a lively Roddy O'Sullivan and Conor Smith in goals for his 5 minute cameo.!
    July 30th 2008:

  • On August second Setanta have lined up two home games. The first is against a summer student selection, called the Holiday Harps. Admittedly they havent trained too hard since arriving in San Diego but word on the street is they still have enough gas in the tank to beat anything Setanta can throw at them. Throw in for this game is at 2pm. Then at 4pm the Los Angeles Wild Geese travel down for the second game of the day. So a great day of Gaelic Football is set for La Jolla High School.
    July 26th 2008:

  • The annual Setanta raffle was held in the Blarney Stone pub in Clairemont on July 26th. We would like to thank Martin Kilgallon for allowing us use his pub for the draw and to Joe O'Donnell and Ruths Chris Steakhouse for donating the second prize. The draw is an important source for fundraising to send our two teams to the North American Finals, but more importantly, we were able to raise nearly $600 for the San Diego Child Abuse Prevention Foundation.

For the record, here are the winners of the raffle:
  • 3rd Place - GAA Shirt - Dermot Cahill2nd Place - $150 Ruth's Chris Gift Cert - Fiona Buckley
  • 1st Place - $1000 - Michael O'Donovan.
    July 26th 2008:

  • Week two of the Sevens was played on July 26th and this week the teams were even closer. After three games each, three of the four teams were level on points. A penalty shoot out decided the two finalists. The final went to extra time and still no winner could be decided so again a penalty shoot out was used to get the winner. Each of the following received a delicious bar of Cadburys Chocolate: Joe King, Colm Conneely, Ray McCormack, Brendan Colgan, Anto Carolan, Mick McShane, Tony O'Sullivan, Mark Hegarty, Shane Prunty, Seth Collins.
    July 19th 2008:

  • The Setanta Sevens began on July 19th. This year things were mixed up a little but with new teams being picked each week rather than a league system. On July 19th we had 39 players show up and a very competitive competition was played with the winning team receiving two bottles of the finest Champagne. For the record the Winning team won the final 3-6 to 3-0. the team was as follows: Joe King, Barry Farrell, Conor Hoctor, Barney Ward, Benji Ward, Brian White, Rich Bombgardner, Jeremy Wright, Dermot Kehily & Seth Collins.
    July 13th 2008:

  • Setanta sent the Junior B and C teams to San Francisco and Denver respectively. The Junior B team comprehensively beat the Cusacks club on a very hot day in Burlingame. The following day back in the city the Ulster Club fielded close to a senior team and we were no match for their speed, skill and most of all, regular match practise.
We sent 18 players to Denver with 12 of the team playing their first game of Gaelic Football ever. Two good games were played. The Denver game could have gone either way but the Denver teams experience showed in the end. The Austin game was a different matter. A team full of experienced footballers basically played our rookies off the field.
Though not the greatest results for Setanta, everyone got games and had a great time.
    June 16th 2008:
The club has ordered new uniforms from Ireland. A limited number will be put on sale early in July.
    June 3rd 2008:

  • Please remember to bring club registration fees to practise on Wednesday. Its $50 for new players and $100 for all others. Make checks payable to "Setanta GFC" or cash is good as well.
  • Email Conor Coffey whether you can make the Denver trip or not. Road trips are great fun and there will be loads of playing time with Austin Texas, Denver and possibly a Chicago team attending. Good times are guaranteed in the Mile High City
  • Remember to send me your profile for the website. The site is a great resource to spread the word about Gaelic Football in Southern California and an updated one is essential.
  • Upcoming games are: Setanta Junior B vs LA Wild Geese on June 14th at 4pm in Long Beach
  • The following week(Sat June 21st) is a seven a side tournament in Irivine at the Irish fair . We are going to try and enter as many teams as possible. Phoenix Gaels are travelling for the tourney, they are current Junior D National Champions.
  • Finally practise continues Mondays and Wednesdays at La Jolla High School at 6pm

May 30th 2008:Good Luck to Setanta players Stephen Darcy and Phelim O'Connell who are running the San Diego Rock n Roll Marathon on Sunday June 1st. The lads hope to run it in 4 hours or less so get out on the course to support them. A good place is Crown Point which is at mile 19, a lovely place to see the hurt.

May 27th 2008:The winter recruitment drive, so far seems to be a massive success with 28 new home based players signed up for the upcoming season. To help the new players Liam O'Neil(Gaelic Football All Star Winner) will be coaching ball skills on Saturdays, 2pm at La Jolla High School. All players are welcome.

April 30th 2008:The new season practise begins on Monday May 5th and Saturday 10th for all new players or players who havent played in a long time. The focus for these sessions will be all ball skills. Training for everyone else begins May 14th. See Calendar section for all dates.

March 8th 2008:The Setanta Awards for 2007 were announced at the Awards Banquet held on March 8th 2008. A great night was had as Setanta and Na Fianna celebrated another great year for San Diego Gaelic Games.Hosted this year at the newest Irish Pub in downtown San Diego, Stout Pub served up great food and pints and everyone had a really good night out. Special thanks to Tim Conery, who set up the PA system and created the video and to Conor Coffey who organised all the trophies
